The Greatest Words You Never Said

In the Beginning

Do you find it interesting that God spoke the world into motion?

Couldn’t He have just thought it into existence?  Or wiggled His nose “Bewitched style”?

Instead, at least the way the story is told, God spoke.  The words came out, and there was light.  There was existence.

There was life.

And isn’t that how it is?  An idea in our head is nothing.  It has no form or shape.  It is not known.  It carries no weight.

But once it is spoken, once it is put on display for someone to see, it becomes real.  It has power.

A Simple Conversation

I was talking with a friend a while back (conversing is a great thing for friends to do FYI).  In the middle of our conversation, I gave an off-handed compliment, not thinking much of it.  She showed surprise at my words, informing me that I had never told her that before.

I asked “Are you sure?”

“Pretty sure,” she said.

She continued to say there are a lot of things people think but never actually say, assuming it is already known.  Because of this, they keep it to themselves.  Maybe they even think they have said words despite the fact that they haven’t.  They undervalue the compliment and by doing so, they undervalue the person it’s meant for.

That person they didn’t tell might never know.

And my friend was completely right.

An Almost Missed Opportunity

Just the other day, I got this song stuck in my head.  It happened to be written and recorded by someone I knew.  To be honest, I loved the song more and more with each listen.  I wondered if I should tell the artist about my love for his song.  Initially, I decided against it.

The song had been out for a while, and I hadn’t spoken to him in quite some time.  What would my words mean to him?  I quickly realized how stupid this question was and proceeded to let him know via Facebook.

I received instant gratitude from him for my kind words.  I then went one step further and shared the song on my own Facebook page.

I know it’s small and seemingly insignificant, but I loved the song, believed in my friend, and knew that he was encouraged by the simple gesture.

Validation

Unless someone is a professional model, they might not know they are beautiful.  Unless they’ve released an album that has reached gold status, they might not know how much you love hearing them sing.

Someone you know might be on the verge of giving up simply because no one ever told them to keep going.  What you think about them means nothing if you don’t say it.  And why wouldn’t you say what you think?

You have the power to speak life into someone.

A few simple words.  Thought brought into existence.

Finding Purpose

In starting this blog, every encouraging word has meant the world to me.  Each one keeps me stronger, pushes me further, causes me to dig deeper.  It makes me feel that on some small level, maybe I matter.

Maybe I have made a difference to someone.  Maybe without me, one person’s world would be a darker place.

I hope as people give encouragement to me, I am giving encouragement to those same people.

Let There Be Light

The beauty of this post?  It comes with the easiest action step ever.  Tell the people around you that you believe in them.

Let them know about the things they do that you love.  Make sure they know that your life would be a little dimmer without them.

Be bold.  Be specific. Be personal.

And if a person speaks life to you, listen.  Let the love in.  Use it to push you further than you could have gone by yourself.  If you take a person’s words and keep them buried inside, they become dead again.

Let the light shine from you as it has been shone upon you.

(PS: the best way to show me encouragement would be to share this post and/or like my facebook page.  Just saying…)

I just have to learn to take this advice. I know it’s good, but I stop myself a lot. Here is a start though, looking at this blog has opened up different perspectives for me and I’m thankful for that. As always, keep it up Tim. You make a difference.

I’m glad to hear it Jonny. Don’t be afraid to let someone encourage you. You’re a great purpose with a specific purpose.

Good stuff. Encouragement goes a long way, and sometimes I receive it just when I need it… just when I’m at the end of my rope.

The greatest spiritual teachers will tell you that ‘what you do onto others, you do onto yourself,’ and vice versa. I have always felt this. Thus, encouraging someone else lifts you up as well. And it works the other way around – if you hurt someone else, you will end up hurting yourself, even if you are not consciously aware of it. Love the God-reference Tim.. :)
